Geelong Grammar School has paid multi-million dollar sums to two survivors of sexual abuse by two different teachers in the 1970s and 1980s.
One client received $5.5 million – believed to be a record payout by the school.
The abuser, Jonathan Harvey, was a boarding master when the offences occurred in 1981-1982 at Corio.
But this was a complex case. Since his school days, our client had worked in six different jurisdictions, in Australia and overseas, which made it difficult to get financial and medical information.
Geelong Grammar also tried to frustrate us with many court applications regarding the evidence, and legal efforts to adjourn the trial. But when the going gets tough …
The other case relates to abuse at Geelong Grammar’s Toorak campus (then known as Glamorgan) in 1971-1975.
Again, this was a complex case as our client had worked across Australia, and was successful in his career.
But we successfully argued that he would have earned considerably more in a more senior role, but for the abuse by teacher Geoff Gillies.
This client received compensation of $2.5 million.
