Hillside Boys Home in Wheelers Hill was a state-run orphanage established by the Victorian Government in 1959 to relieve congestion at Turana Youth Training Centre in Royal Park.
It almost exclusively housed boys who had been disadvantaged by disability or neglect.
Hillside operated from 1959 to about 1985.
Boys were punished for bedwetting by having a rubber sheath with electrodes attached to their genitals, shocking them if they urinated during the night.
In 2014, Ronald Thomas Buckley – who was the Superintendent in charge of Hillside – plead guilty in the County Court of Victoria to the sexual assault of numerous children.
Buckley preyed on vulnerable children who were entrusted to his care. He died in prison in 2015.
