A Rightside Legal client and former student of Gippsland Grammar has won compensation of $2 million after being abused by a teacher with a long history of abusing female students in public and private schools.
The State Government also contributed to the compensation sum because it failed to warn Gippsland Grammar of the teacher’s previous abuse of students in the government system. Further, after Gilfillan resigned from the state school system, the government allowed him to remain registered as a teacher in private schools.
Rightside Legal’s work in tracking Gilfillan’s abuse of students in the government and private sectors will assist other survivors Rightside Legal is currently representing and others who have not yet stepped forward.
Gilfillan is currently serving a life sentence for many sexual offences.
