The Education Department has paid more than $5 million in compensation to Rightside Legal clients after allowing the principal of a western suburbs primary school to keep teaching despite knowing he had secretly photographed a naked girl through a two-way bathroom mirror in 1980.
Despite the 1980 incident, principal Richard George Ross remained in charge of Braybrook Primary School until 1989, when, after further complaints, he was arrested by police who found 3000 slides of naked and semi-naked children dating back 10 years, plus another 100 rolls of undeveloped film in his office.
Ross, who led the school from 1969 to 1989, received only a suspended sentence for the assault of a single student. But he is known to have abused many students during his time at the helm.
Rightside Legal recently won more than $2 million plus legal costs from the Education Department for one former student of the school. It was our fourth case involving Braybrook Primary, and the number is expected to grow significantly with other former students having made inquiries.
