Rightside Legal has secured $8 million in compensation for a man abused in the mid-1970s by teacher Darrel Ray at Beaumaris Primary School – a record payout by the Victorian Government.
This was despite the challenge of not being allowed to use public evidence of Ray’s prolific offending, as told to the Board of Inquiry into historical child sexual abuse at Beaumaris Primary School and some other government schools.
Survivors were surprised to learn that Rightside Legal had to start afresh, to locate witnesses and abuse survivors who were referenced in that report.
However, that work is now done, making the path easier for other claimants.
This will allow Rightside Legal to assist other survivors of abuse at Beaumaris Primary School, and 22 other schools that employed Darrel Ray – and three other paedophile teachers named by the Board of Inquiry, including Graham Steele and David MacGregor.
