St Joseph’s Boys Primary in Malvern was run by the De La Salle Brothers and operated from 1917 to 1993.
In or around the 1960’s, repeated complaints were made to Senior De La Salle Brothers that Brother Anselm Hallam was physically and sexually abusing students. In about 1966, students made complaints to a teacher about Brother Anselm’s abuse – when this teacher confronted the Principal about the complaints, their concerns were dismissed and ignored.
After the complaints were made, Brother Anselm was not sacked or reported to the police – he was simply moved to another school.
In 1963, repeated complaints of sexual and physical abuse were made against Brother Pius Bernard (born Raymond Hugh Logan) while he was teaching at De La Salle Brothers’ School in Midland, Perth. When these complaints came to light, he was transferred to St Joseph’s Primary School where he took over the role of Brother Ambrose (who himself was infamous for excessive physical abuse) and continued his abuse of students.
He plead guilty to multiple counts of abuse against boys in February 2000.
