Stewart Heywood, from New Zealand, worked at Wesley College from 1960 to 1987 where he was a teacher and student counsellor.

He was on the Wesley School Council from 1983 to 1987.

He had an office in the middle school campus in Prahran where he would have closed-door one-on-one counselling sessions with students.

In the 1970s and 80s, Heywood sexually abused a number of students during counselling sessions, including, in some cases, vulnerable students who had already been sexually abused by another teacher at the school, John McMillan.

He also brought students to his house and abused them there.

In 2004, shortly after being interviewed by police in relation to sexually abusing a student, and after admitting to abusing students at Wesley College, Heywood died by suicide near a Wesley school camp in Healesville. After his death, Wesley College described Heywood as “an outstanding servant”.
