Rightside Legal has successfully represented clients who were abused as children by Roger Digges.
Digges was a life-long abuser of many children – including as a teacher and boarding house tutor at the Corio campus of Geelong Grammar between 1970 and 1973.
In 1973, Digges dropped his pants in front of a classroom full of children while teaching biology. A group of students reported this incident to then headmaster Thomas Garnett, who instead of dismissing Digges, sought a psychiatric opinion and then (unbelievably), moved him to the school’s junior campus in Toorak.
It was not until a year later in 1974 that Digges was dismissed from his teaching position.
Tragically, Digges would return to the school in 1980 as a relief teacher under then headmaster Ivan Sutherland. This was despite Sutherland being aware that of Digges’ dismissal in 1974 for allegations of sexual misconduct.
Digges was able to once again have access to students and remove them from the school for activities such as overnight boating trips. He went on to abuse more students.
Digges then moved on to teach at a school for children living with disabilities and continued abusing children.
he also became a foster carer and abused children he was meant to care for.
After serving a jail term in Queensland he was deported to Ireland despite being wanted by Victoria Police. He died in Ireland before he could be extradited to Victoria.
