Pickering, now deceased, sexually abused numerous boys across three decades from 1960 through to the early 1990s.
Sadly, the Catholic Church, in particular the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, knew of his sexual abuse for decades but failed to take action.
One Rightside client was abused from 1982 to 1986, despite the church being aware of at least three other cases 20 years earlier. Now in his 50s, this client settled his claim against the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne for $3.5 million.
Pickering was known to have groomed young boys through the lure of money, alcohol and cigarettes.

- St Theresa’s Parish, Essendon (1958 – 1965)
- St Kilda East Parish (1966 – 1968)
- Sacred Heart Catholic Parish, Warburton (1969 – 1972)
- St Peter’s Parish, Clayton (1973 – 1978)
- St James’ Parish, Gardenvale (1978 – 1993).
In 1993, when Pickering had been parish priest for 15 years at St James, Gardenvale, he fled to England to escape being held to account in Australia. He died in Britain in 2009 and was never charged.
We believe Pickering may have abused children who have not come forward yet.
