McNamara was a Marist Brother who taught at various Catholic high schools across Australia.
St Paul’s College in Traralgon (he was principal there in the late 1970s)
McNamara sexually assaulted numerous boys under the guise of massages for injuries, or pastoral care. It was well known among the students that to be called to the sports shed by McNamara would often involve abuse.
The Marist Brothers were first notified of McNamara’s conduct when he was at Champagnat College in Wangaratta, now known as Galen College.
He then moved around and went on to teach in:
- Bendigo (VIC)
- New South Wales
- South Australia
- Preston (VIC)
- Shepparton (VIC)
- Traralgon (VIC), and
- Sale (VIC) at Our Lady of Sion College in Sale, which is now part of Catholic College Sale.
His most notorious years were the 1970s, when he was a principal, head of sport and later in a welfare role at St Paul’s Catholic College in Traralgon, now known as Lavalla Catholic College.
McNamara served several jail sentences for his offending.
