A Melbourne man who demolished asbestos cladding from his home with his bare hands, a crowbar and hammer, has been awarded significant compensation after contracting mesothelioma.

The father of teenagers sued Amaca Pty Ltd (formerly James Hardie and Co).

Tragically, asbestos cases are not new, and continue to occur, decades after these products were banned.

We investigated and found documents proving that James Hardie was the only manufacturer of asbestos building products in Victoria at the relevant time (1977), and were able to locate the owner of the brick cladding business almost 50 years after the cladding work was done – a crucial witness.

James Hardie could have warned home renovators of the risk of asbestos in its cladding (and hidden elsewhere in homes) but instead it denied it was responsible for its products years later, and claimed it could not have known what its products were being used for.
