Max Guzelian was a music teacher at Geelong Grammar School between 1965 and 1998, including as a full-time staff member from 1970 to 1988.
Guzelian sexually abused numerous students in the course of giving them instrumental music lessons at the school.
One survivor told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse that she was sexually abused by Guzelian over a period of 3 years during the 1970s, when she was aged 10 to 13, and Guzelian was her clarinet teacher.
The student told the Royal Commission that after reporting her abuse to her mother in 1978, she met with the Director of Music at the time, who told her that the abuse was partly her fault, and as a result, she was no longer permitted to play in the school’s band or orchestras.
Guzelian remained a permanent member of staff until 1988, and continued teaching students at the school as a contractor until 1998, during which time, the school received numerous reports of inappropriate touching by Guzelian.
He was forced to retire in 1998 after attempting to kiss a student on the lips.
Guzelian died in 2013, but if you suffered his abuse, you can still claim financial compensation for the distress and trauma he caused.
