Reverend Michael Painter

Rightside Legal has successfully represented clients who were abused as children by Anglican priest, Reverend Michael Painter.

The Anglican Church in Western Australia had known since at least 1979 of grave concerns about Painter’s behaviour. However he was allowed to continue to serve the church and abuse vulnerable children across WA while doing so.

Between 1960 and 1988 Painter was deployed at the following parishes in WA:

• Nedlands
• Gosnells
• Morawa
• Mt Hawthorn
• Beaconsfield, and
• the Parkerville Children and Youth Care facility.

Painter admitted to abusing a 16 year old boy while he slept in a Mount Hawthorn rectory in 1984.

A number of other charges were laid against him before his death by suicide in 1994.

And many more victims came forward after his death to tell of their own experiences of abuse by Painter.

According to Church records, Painter sexually abused at least 14 young people, making him the most prolific Anglican paedophile priest in WA history.
