It is also known for excessive corporal punishment, and for teachers engaging in sexualised discipline.
One of Monivae’s worst offenders, Edward Mamo, struck boys across the bare buttocks with a strap or a cane or other implement. In 2013, Mamo pleaded guilty to seven charges of indecent assault over the period 1976 to 1980, in relation to seven different victims who were students at the school.
In 2015, he pleaded guilty to a further 21 charges of indecent assault over the period from about 1973 to 1981, in relation to 14 victims who were students at the school.
