Beaumaris Primary School in the 1960s and 1970s was a nest for paedophile teachers, overseeing a generation of students who suffered abuse.

The abuse epidemic at the school was a shocking and monumental failure and sadly, a microcosm of an education system that repeatedly failed to protect children.

One of the worst, and certainly the most notorious abuser, was school’s librarian and sports coach Darrell Ray.

Ray may have abused 100 or more students at the school. In 2000, he was found guilty of 27 counts of indecently assaulting 19 boys at Moorabbin Primary School and Beaumaris Primary School between 1967 and 1976.

But there were other offenders too. In 2023, Ray and three other paedophile teachers were the focus of the Victorian government’s Board of Inquiry into sexual abuse of schoolchildren at Beaumaris Primary and 23 other government schools.
