Albert Edward Palframan was a volunteer at Geelong College who helped students with woodwork at the school’s House of Guilds.
The House of Guilds was an area of the school in which students were taught woodwork, ceramics, music and architecture. Students were also permitted to attend the House of Guilds on weekdays after the end of normal teaching hours.
Palframan assisted and advised students in the woodwork shop in the House of Guilds for many years. He used this opportunity to touch students in a sexually inappropriate way.
Despite Palframan’s consistently creepy and offensive behaviour in the woodwork area, the school did nothing to ban him from the school grounds.
Geelong College paid $2.7 million to a former student and Rightside Legal client who was sexually abused by Palframan in the 1980s and 90s.
At the time, the award was the highest by a judge or jury in an institutional abuse claim in Australia.
