Father Gerard Anthony Coffey, now deceased, was a priest in the Diocese of Sale.

Coffey was ordained in Ireland in the late 1960s. After arriving in Australia, he served in the following parishes throughout the 1970s and 1980s:

  • Bairnsdale
  • Orbost
  • Iona
  • Narre Warren
  • Drouin.

In 1972, Coffey was appointed as the Bishop’s Secretary in the parish of Sale and served in the office of the then Bishop of Sale, Arthur Francis Fox.

Rightside Legal has spoken with and represented survivors who were sexually abused by Father Coffey in the 1970s.

Rightside Legal has also represented survivors who reported other abuse in the Diocese of Sale to Father Coffey in the late 1970s. Unfortunately, Father Coffey did not act on those complaints.

We believe Coffey may have sexually abused more children who have not yet been compensated for the distress and trauma he caused.

Even though Coffey died in 2008, survivors who were sexually abused by him in the Diocese of Sale can still claim financial compensation for the impact of his offending.
