William Gilfillan, more commonly known as Rob, was a state and private school teacher from the 1970’s to the 1990’s.
Gilfillan’s early victims were female students at Traralgon High School in the early 1980’s. Two girls made official complaints of sexual abuse against Gilfillan, and an investigation was undertaken by the Education Department.
Gilfillan would go on to leave the public school system soon after but reappeared as a private school teacher in the Gippsland area.
Gilfillan went on to teach at Presentation College in Moe in the late 1980’s and then Gippsland Grammar School between 1989 and 1990. This was despite a former Traralgon High School teacher raising concerns with Gippsland Grammar about Gilfillan’s suitability to teach.
Gilfillan also offended within his own family home and was convicted of sexual abuse and torture offences against his daughter in 2018. He was sentenced to 48 years in prison.
In 2026 Gilfillan was finally convicted of sexual penetration and indecent assault against the two women who had first raised complaints about him at Traralgon High School. He was sentenced to a further seven and a half years in prison with no parole.
