Gary Arthur Mitchell

A teacher between 1964 and 1989, Mitchell taught at schools including Dandenong North Primary School in the late 1960’s and Beaumaris Primary School between 1971 and 1973.

Mitchell’s offending began early in his career and would span decades.

He was allowed to remain teaching despite a complaint of sexual abuse being made by a student at Beaumaris Primary School to a State District Inspector in 1971. Mitchell, at the time, was working alongside another notorious paedophile, Darrell Vivian Ray, who was also Gary’s brother-in-law.

Further complaints would be made against both men at Beaumaris by students and teachers, and all ultimately ignored.

Mitchell’s offending was first brought to the attention of Victoria Police 1995 by a former student who went on to become one of Rightside Legal’s brave clients. He was jailed for offences against our client, and others, in 1996.

Since that time Mitchell has been investigated and convicted for further offending against children at State primary schools. So we firmly believe there may be other people who were abused by Mitchell who have not come forward yet.
